1 Dead, Cop Shot in Milwaukee County Before Pursuit Ends, Suspect Killed

An overnight shooting in Shorewood, Wisc. left one person dead, another injured and a police officer shot in the chest early Thursday before the suspect was fatally shot during a pursuit in Milwaukee hours later.

Just before 3 a.m., Shorewood officers were called to the 4100 block of North Bartlett Avenue for a report of a shooting.

When they arrived, one of the officers was shot in the chest. The round struck the officer’s ballistic vest, preventing serious injury. The officer was treated at a local hospital and is expected to recover.

As additional officers arrived and secured the area, they found two people connected to the initial incident. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. A second person had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Shorewood police said the shooter fled the area after the attack. Around 9:20 a.m., several law enforcement agencies located the suspect in a vehicle, prompting a pursuit that ended in the area of West Reservoir Avenue and North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Milwaukee.

During the pursuit and again at the final stop, police say the suspect fired at pursuing officers. Multiple officers returned fire and struck the suspect, who was pronounced dead. No officers were hurt during the pursuit or shooting.

Shorewood police clarified that their officers were not involved in the pursuit or the shooting of the suspect. The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, led by the Oak Creek Police Department, is handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the earlier incident in Shorewood.

As of Thursday night, authorities had not released the names of those involved. The suspect’s identity is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.

Investigators say the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
