A 13-year-old boy is in custody after allegedly firing multiple shots at Douglas County deputies during a tense standoff Tuesday evening south of Superior, Wisconsin.

Deputies responded just after 4:30 p.m. to a home in the 5000 block of State Trunk Highway 35 in the Town of Superior following a report of a juvenile described as "out of control" and damaging property.

When the first deputy arrived, he encountered the boy on the back porch. The juvenile reportedly told the deputy that he would have to shoot him before retreating into the residence.

Moments later, the boy emerged with a long gun and fired a round as the deputy took cover. The deputy then moved the original caller to safety while backup units arrived and took positions around the home.

Over the next hour, the boy is accused of firing at least three more rounds in the direction of deputies. One deputy reported hearing a shot pass over his head. Despite the escalating danger, no deputies returned fire and no injuries were reported.

Eventually, the boy exited the home unarmed and was seen entering a detached garage. When he came out again, he was wearing a black tactical vest. Deputies took him into custody at that point without further incident.

Sheriff Matt Izzard later commended the professionalism and restraint shown by the responding deputies, highlighting the actions of Deputies Fossum, Newton, and Sgt. Knutson in preventing the situation from turning deadly. Assisting agencies included the Town of Superior Volunteer Fire Department, Mayo Ambulance, the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office and the Superior Police Emergency Response Team, which was en route to the scene before the standoff ended.

Authorities have not disclosed the boy’s name or when criminal charges may be filed.
