Child Fatally Shot in Iowa Apartment, Police Investigating

A 4-year-old child died Monday afternoon after being accidentally shot inside an Iowa apartment.

Ames police officers were dispatched at 2:27 p.m. on March 31 to the apartment building on the 200 block of South Sherman Avenue after a 911 caller said a child had been shot.

Responders arrived at the residence and began life-saving measures before the child was airlifted to MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. Despite efforts by EMS and hospital staff, the child was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be conducted by the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Ames Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and authorities have not released any further details, including how the firearm was accessed or who was present in the apartment at the time of the incident.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the child as of publication.
